“JUST MARRIED”

Herbert & Dorothy Saller - Just MarriedThe Fred W. Saller family received the surprise of their lives last week. Miss Lenore Saller brought home the mail from the post office, and in looking it over, she came to what looked like an invitation to some affair. She looked the envelope over, and on discovery, it was addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Saller and daughters (not family) the son being omitted. And in a regularly sisterly manner she began to laugh, and called out: “Ha! Herb, see, you are not invited!” Then she went on reading and in a twinkling of an eye, the sisterly giggle stopped, as she digested the contents, which read something like this: Mrs. Charles H.  Bahlman invites you to attend a marriage reception to be given at my home, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Saller, who were married on December 17, 1925. After Miss Lenore recovered her equilibrium, she passed the “surprise” invitation over to her mother, and then the father. They looked at the invitation – then at Herbie – and Herbie fessed up. He and Miss Dorothy Bahlman of Beecher hid themselves away one cold December day, and were quietly made man and wife – and it was no one’s dumb business.

Well, all there is to it, although Herbie delayed divulging his little secret for almost one-half a year, we with a host of relatives and friends, join in wishing him and his charming little bride many years of happiness and prosperity.

I wish I was there, don’t you?

Mrs. Saller Robbed Tuesday Night

Mrs. Saller RobbedMrs. Dorothy Saller was robbed about midnight Tuesday as she checked out the day’s receipts at the Bahlman Gas Station. According to Mrs. Saller, she and Mrs. Rose Muehsler and Mrs. Myrtle Scheiman were on the way home from a Women’s Welfare meeting when they stopped at the station.

As Mrs. Saller came out of the station, two colored men stopped her, took the money bag and ran to the rear of the station. They jumped in a car, went west at a high rate of speed, turning south on Catalpa Street.

The day’s receipts and records were in the money bag and she has no idea of the amount taken.

Mrs. Saller thought one man had something in his right hand but she did not see it too clearly in the dark and could not say it was a gun. They didn’t touch her, just grabbed the bag and ran.

MARKS TWENTY-FIVE YEARS IN OIL BUSINESS IN BEECHER

Minnie, Henry F and Lena Bahlman copy

Marks Twenty-Five Years in OIl Business in Beecher 8-23-1951A letter received by Mrs. M. Bahlman, from the firm with which she has done business during her long career in servicing this community, as a distributor of oils, is a testimonial to her efficiency in operating the business for the past twenty-five years which her late husband founded five years before he passed away.

Mrs. Bahlman states that she has customers who have been served without interruption the entire thirty years and others who have been getting oil from her for the twenty-five years she has been operating the business.

She wishes to express her sincere gratitude to all of her many customers and to the entire community for the good will and cooperation that enabled her to carry on with such marked success over the quarter century.

sinclair 8.1961.1Following is the letter from the Sinclair Refining Company:

Dear Mrs. Bahlman:  Our records indicate that the Bahlman Oil Company started doing business with Sinclair on August 19, 1921, thirty years ago. Thirty years out of anybody’s life is an awfully long time. The fact that we have been doing business together for so long could be construed that either we have treated you very fairly in supplying you products and good service throughout this time, or you have been very patient people. Naturally we hope that the former assumption has a great deal to do with you maintaining your membership in the Sinclair family for such a long time. After such a long association, naturally we do tend to consider you one of the family. The only thing that we have to guard against is taking our old customers like you too much for granted.

I just wanted to tell you that we hold you and yours in the highest regard around here and are extremely happy and proud that you have stayed with us so many years, Sinclair Refining Company, D.G. Markley, Manager Wholesale Sales

DIETRICH WIECHEN DIED, WEDNESDAY A.M.

Diedrich Wiechen ObitDietrich (Dick) Wiechen, 82 years of age, passed away, early Wednesday morning, at his home on Gould Street. Mr. Wiechen suffered a stroke, Sunday, from which he never rallied. He had been a resident of Beecher for forty-six years.

Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Esther Braun; four grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Fred Boicken.

OBITUARY – DIETRICH WIECHEN

Dietrich Wiechen obit 1The departed, Dietrich Wiechen, son of Henry and Sophia nee Engelke Wiechen, both deceased, was born on a farm in Will Township near Peotone, March 25, 1868. Baptized in early infancy, he was later, following a course of religious instruction, confirmed with others in Zion Lutheran Church near Sollitt, April 2, 1882, by the last Rev. A Wangerin. He was united in holy wedlock with Louise Klusmeyer, Sept. 2, 1894, the Rev. A. Wangerin performing the ceremony. This happy union was blessed with two children, Harry and Esther, of whom Harry, preceded the father in death, April 29, 1933, leaving only Esther, Mrs. Rudolph Braun, to deeply mourn the passing of a kind, loving father. Immediately after marriage, the young couple engaged in or continued farming until 1914, at which time they moved into their beautiful home on north Gould Street in Beecher. Still in the best of health and ever active, he became a member of the Wilke Lumber and Coal firm. Retiring from this and yet feeling the urge for work, he for some years took over the janitor-ship of the public school. School House 1907

Ten years ago, however, he suffered a paralytic stroke from which he never completely recovered to gain his former health. More or less bound to his home, but always up and around again and frequent attacks of minor ills, he, on Sunday, July 16, at 4:45 p.m. suffered a severe heart attack from which he showed no signs of recovery although everything known to medical science and loving care was done.  His peaceful end came, Wednesday, July 19, at 4:45 a.m. at the ripe age of 82 years, 3 months and 8 days.

Dietrich Wiechen obit 2He leaves to mourn his passing his only daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Braun; one daughter-in-law, Irene, Mrs. Harry Wiechen; four grandchildren, Richard and Joyce Wiechen, and Marilyn and Harry Braun; one sister, Louise, Mrs. Fred Boicken; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred Wiechen; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted, Friday, July 21, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hack Funeral Home where Rev. G. Horst spoke comforting words to a large gathering of relatives and friends.  A quartet of Mrs. Vernon Huenerberg, Mrs. Hilda Boysen, Mrs. Mary Ostermeyer and Miss Carolyn Kappe, sang four appropriate songs, accompanied by Mrs. Marge Hunte. Beautiful floral pieces attested to the esteem in which Mr. Wiechen was held by all who knew him. He was laid to rest in the Beecher Mausoleum.

The departed, ever a kind, loving husband and father, lived a clean, upright Christian life in all sincerity and truth the present ways of life never influencing him to the extent of doubting or wavering in his Christian faith and hope. The Bible was and remained to him the spoken word of God, the revelation of God as his heavenly Father through faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thus we may trust and hope that he is now realizing the certain blessed truth of his confirmation verse — Romans 8. v18: “For I reckon that the suffering of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

SERVICES FOR MRS. H. WEHMHOEFER, JAN. 2

Augusta Wehmhoefer obit 1Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Henry Wehmhoefer by Rev. G. Horst, Saturday, Jan. 2, beginning at 1:30 pm in the Hack Funeral Home and continued in St. Luke’s Evangelical and Reformed Church where a large gathering of relatives and friends assembled to pay their last respects.  Interment was in the Mausoleum.

Mrs. Wehmhoefer had been in poor health for some time and suffered a stroke several weeks ago.  She was taken to Hazel Crest Hospital where she passed away, last week, Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 7:30 pm at the age of 74 years.  Obituary appears elsewhere in this issue.

OBITUARY – Mrs. Henry Augusta Wehmhoefer

Augusta Wehmhoefer obit 2The departed, Mrs. Henry Wehmhoefer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wehling, both deceased, was born, Aug. 26, 1873, on Old Wehling homestead, 3 miles southeast of Beecher.  Being the child of Christian parents, she was soon after birth received into the christian church through the holy rites of baptism in the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Petersburg.  Following a course of religious instruction in the great fundamentals of our christian religion, she was confirmed with others in the same church, April 3, 1887, by the late Rev. H. Gose.  On Sept. 24, 1895, she was united in holy wedlock with Mr. Henry Wehmhoefer, the ceremony taking place in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chicago, the late Rev. J.C. Nuetzel officiating.  This happy union was blessed with four children, of whom one, Harold, in 1905, preceded the parents in death.  The surviving children, who deeply mourn the passing of a true loving mother, are: Ethel, Mrs. Arthur Hack; Lawrence and Howard, all of Beecher.  Immediately after their marriage the young couple established their home in Beecher, where the young husband bought and successfully operated the well known Wehmhoefer Hardware Store. Wehmhoefer Hardware.resized Gifted with rare business acumen, he later acquired the Tatge Garage on the Dixie Highway, which also crowned his foresight and ability.  Because of his many sterling qualities and his deep interest in community welfare, he not only served as president of the school board, but also, for many years, as president of the Farmers State Bank.Henry Wehmhoefer garage off Dixie Highway

School House 1907

Beecher School House 1907

Sharing this happy, busy, successful life, the departed, together with her children, was deeply grieved when July 9, 1936, following a long  siege of painful illness, her husband was called to eternal rest. Finding comfort and strength in her faith, she lovingly carried on her duties as mother, deeply interested in the welfare of her children and with millions of other mothers silently bearing the anxiety and strain of the late World War in which her son, Howard, also took part as an officer of the air force.  Deeply grateful and happy over his safe return, she nevertheless began to show reactions of the ordeal and became more or less dependent upon the loving attention and care of her children, especially the care and attention given her by her daughter, Ethel, Mrs. Arthur Hack, who did everything possible to brighten and cheer her.  However, it became more and more apparent that her strength was rapidly failing and thus when she suffered a stroke a little better than two weeks ago, the doctors could offer but little hope for recovery, yet hoping against hope, they had her transferred to the Hazel Crest Hospital, Tuesday, to do everything possible known to medical science, but God in his wisdom and love granted her a peaceful exit out of this life the same day, Dec. 30, 1947, at 7:30 pm, at the age of 74 years, 4 months and 4 days.

Augusta Wehmhoefer obit 3She leaves to mourn her passing, the children already mentioned; one son-in-law, 2 daughters-in-law, 2 grandchildren, one great grandchild, 2 brothers, 6 sisters-in-law, Mrs. Sophie Wehling, Mrs. Wm. Wehling, Mrs. Leonard Cole, Mrs. Ed. Wehmhoefer, Mrs. Martin Peters and Miss Carrie Hoffman; one brother-in-law, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted, Saturday, Jan. 2. beginning at 1:30 pm at Hack Funeral Home and continued at St. Luke’s Church where Rev. G. Horst, her pastor, spoke fittingly to the relatives and a large gathering of friends.  The following: Mrs. Leona Huenerberg, Mrs. Violet Meeter, Mrs. Mildred Elk, Mrs. Marie Ostermeyer and Mrs. Hilda Boyens, sang three appropriate songs.  The many exceptionally beautiful floral pieces and numerous memorial wreaths attest to the esteem in which the deceased was held.  She was laid to rest in the Beecher Mausoleum.

The departed, a loving wife and mother, was always deeply attached to her home and loved ones: as a child of God and Christian, she ever remained true to her Christian upbringing and training, being a member of St. Luke’s Church and its Women’s Guild and at all times being found willing in supporting her church and the kingdom work at large.  Not given much to the vanities of life, she sought and longed for the deeper life promised to all the children of God.  Realizing her life here upon earth was drawing to a close, she, in faith and hope looked forward to the day that shall endless be in the presence of God.

MRS. FRIEDERIKA JOHANNA PETERS

Friederika Peters Obit 1Mrs. Friedarika Johanna Peters, widow of the late Martin Peters, died, Saturday, August 9th, at 6:30 p.m., at the home on the Dixie Highway. She attained the age of 77 years and 5 months. Hardening of the arteries caused a cerebral hemorrhage which terminated her temporal life within a short time.

Funeral services, in charge of her pastor, Rev. William H.L. Schuetz, were conducted, Tuesday afternoon, August 12th, at 1:30 o’clock, at the home and continued in Zion Lutheran Church. Pastor Schuetz spoke words of comfort in both English and German on the basis of Ps. 91, 16: “With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.” Interment was had in the local mausoleum.

AGED RESIDENT OF COMMUNITY BURIED

Friederika Peters obit 2The deceased was born, March 9, 1854, in Pusta, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. Soon after birth she was baptized there and later on confirmed in the Lutheran church of her native town. Her parents were Fred Barmann and wife, Friederika, nee Schlorf. She had one brother and two sisters, all of whom preceded her in death.

On October 2, 1881, she was married to Martin Peters in Berenshagen, Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Her husband died, January 6, 1929. They were the parents of two sons and four daughters, all of whom survive.

In 1884 the young couple, together with their oldest child, came to America and settled in Chicago for the first seven years. Then they moved out here to Beecher where they continued to reside ever since.

Mrs. Peters enjoyed good health throughout her life until about four years ago when old age began to tell on her. During the last weeks of her life she failed very rapidly. Hardening of the arteries finally caused a cerebral hemorrhage, causing her to pass away rather suddenly but quietly and peacefully.

September 28, 1939 – BEECHER HERALD – OBITUARY

Henry Freerking

Henry Freerking ObitThe departed, Mr. Henry Freerking, son of Henry and Louise, nee Scheer, Freerking, was born, October 27, 1882, near Beecher. The child of Christian parents, he was soon after birth baptized and later, following a course of religious instruction, confirmed by Rev. G. Koch in St. John’s Church, April 11, 1897. On Sept. 1, 1907, he was married to Miss Minnie Seitz. The ceremony taking place in Zion’s Lutheran Church at Beecher, Rev. L. Going officiating.

This union was blessed with five children, of whom two preceded the father in death. The surviving children, who together with the wife, mourn the departure of a true loving husband and father are: William, Herman and Dorothy, all in Beecher. Immediately after marriage, the young couple took up farming, at first southwest and later southeast of this village. After following this enterprise for about eleven years, the family came to Beecher and made their home on the northwest corner of Indiana and Dunbar streets.

Henry manually operated the crossing gates at the Beecher Depot gate house. This is a photo taken after a snowstorm.

Being employed for many years by the C. & E. I.R.R. Co., as a section hand and signal man, the departed in late years was forced by illness to lead a more or less retired life. Following two light attacks of apoplexy during the early part of this year, from which he so far recovered that he could be up and about, he suffered another, Monday, Sept. 18, which excluded all hope of recovery. Although everything possible was done to make him comfortable, the end of his life came peacefully on that same day at 9 p.m., at the age of 56 years, 10 months and 21 days. He leaves to mourn, his wife; the children already mentioned; one sister, Louise, Mrs. Aug. Wehrmann, Beecher; two brothers, William, south of Beecher, and Herman, near the state line; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted, Thursday, Sept. 27, from the Hack Funeral Home, at 1:30 p.m., where Rev. G. Horst spoke fittingly in both the English and German languages. A quartet, composed of members of St. Luke’s Choir, rendered two appropriate songs, Mrs. Frank Hunte accompanying them on the piano. A number of floral pieces gave evidence of the esteem in which the deceased was held by those who really knew him. He found his last resting place in the Beecher Mausoleum.

The departed, a true loving husband, father, brother and friend, went true to his real inner better self as in later years has convinced all who knew him that natural weaknesses and inclinations can be fought and overcome with the help of Christian training, faith, hope, love and determination. Thus, during his late years, with the approaching eventide of his life, he stood as one who merited the respect and esteem of all of us who are struggling along on the path to eternal life. Thus, we may say farewell to him in the hope and assurance that the setting of his life’s sun here on earth presages a glorious dawn in the hereafter.

H. WEHMHOEFER

Leading Hardware Merchant Has Many Business Interests

Wehmhoefer Hardware store adH. Wehmhoefer, Beecher’s leading hardware merchant, was born in Chicago, remaining in the city for twenty years, when he moved to Beecher. Ten years ago in August he started his hardware business, and it speaks well for its management that during all these years Mr. Wehmhoefer has had no competition. This fact is the highest monument to the liberal and honorable treatment always accorded by Mr. Wehmhoefer to his patrons, and though the rapid growth of Beecher is now introducing competitive business, Mr. Wehmhoefer may be counted on to retain his old patrons who have known him for years and who know him for what he is worth. Having lived in Beecher for 15 years and enjoyed the success that comes from a busy life, Mr. Wehmhoefer believes in Beecher and believes in Beechers’ institutions. He is one of the men who will do his part in bringing about a larger expansion of Beecher’s industrial activity. Mr. Wehmhoefer is one of the directors of the Eastern Illinois Brick company, the leading industry, and he would be among the first to welcome additional industries. He is unalterably opposed to any stand-still policy. In the matter of new educational facilities his vote is already recorded on the side of progress, and he will do his utmost to bring about the desired end. Mr. Wehmhoefer is a member of St. Lucas Church, and both he and his family take interest in all the social circles of the town.

Deering equipmentIn addition to his large hardware business Mr. Wehmhoefer is exclusive agent for many of the leading farm implement firms, including the Deering Company. In a word, the tenth year of the establishment of his business sees Mr. Wehmhoefer at the head of two of the most important business enterprises that an agricultural community can have, and it is the wish of his fellow-townsmen that he may long continue to attract people from far and near to the village of Beecher.

EASTERN ILLINOIS BRICK COMPANY

One of the Best Manufacturing Plants of its Kind

Supremacy in the brick industry was the goal of the incorporators of the Eastern Illinois Brick Company when the plant was established some three years ago (1902), and with the strength of purpose characteristic of Beecher push and enterprise, the business has been exploited until now this goal has been reached, and the euphonious slogan “Beecher for Brick,” is being surely raised as the banner cry of the brick industry. This is no vain or empty boast, for the company owns over thirteen acres of the finest brick land in the state, and, after some experimenting, the top notch has been reached in the product turned out. Every foot of the land is available, and the plant is being extended rapidly, more machinery is being installed, and, before the summer wanes, the plant will give employment to from 75 to 80 skilled workmen. At present the demand for Beecher Brick is in excess of the supply, but with the rapid growth of the works the facilities will soon be such as to meet all requirements.

The above is, in brief outline, a synopsis of the history of the Beecher brick industry.

The stock is all held by local capital, the leading business men of Beecher being the directors. The following are the officers:  Thomas Clark, president; Dr. Van Voorhis, vice-president; Arthur Struve, secretary and treasurer; Hendy Stade, superintendent. The directors consist of all the above with H.F. Wilke and H. Wehmhoefer.

In fact, the best brains and capital of the town is at the back of this industry, and the ambition of the company is to enlarge the meaning of the motto, “Beecher for Brick” into the higher and broader motto of “Beecher for Best Brick.”

BEECHER MOURNS LEADING MERCHANTS

Henry Wehmhoefer

Henry C. Wehmhoefer obit 1Henry Wehmhoefer, son of the deceased William and Mary Wehmhoefer, was born in Chicago June 30, 1871. Being the child of fine Christian parents he was soon after birth, baptized by the Rev. Wagner in Zion’s Church, Chicago. When in the fall of 1884, his parents became residents of our community, ample opportunity was given the departed to complete a course in religious instruction at St. Paul’s Church, northwest of Beecher where, on March 29, 1885, he was confirmed by the Rev. A.H. Brauer. Filled with the enthusiasm, hope and energy of youth, he soon sought and found employment in Chicago, first as clerk in a wholesale grocery store and later as painter and decorator.

On September 24, 1895, he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Augusta Wehling, the ceremony taking place in Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chicago, Rev. J.G. Nuetzel officiating. This happy union was blessed with four children, one of whom, Harold, in 1905, preceded the father in death. The surviving children, who together with the mother deeply mourn the loss of a loving husband and father are; Ethel, Mrs. Arthur Hack; and Lawrence and Howard, all of Beecher.

Immediately after their marriage the young couple established their home here in Beecher, where the departed bought and successfully operated the former Charles Hack hardware store. Gifted with rare business acumen he, 18 years ago, also acquired the Tatge garage on the Dixie Highway, which also proved a good investment.

About the same time he realized the fulfillment of a long cherished dream in calling a beautiful home on the northwest end of Gould Street his own. Because of his many sterling qualities and his deep interest in the welfare of the community which he had learned to love, he not only served as president of the School Board, but also for many years, up to the time of his death, as president of the Farmers State Bank, which positions of honor and trust he filled to the full satisfaction of all concerned.

Henry C. Wehmhoefer obit 2Beginning to ail some six years ago his life gradually and increasingly became filled with intense pain and suffering. In his quest for relief and possible cure he consulted the best of medical skill here, and in many of the hospitals of Chicago, always bearing himself with Christian patience and fortitude. During all these years, when at home or in the hospitals, the best of loving attention and care and most skilled and untiring nursing was given him. This applies especially to his stay in the North Chicago Hospital, where he had stayed the longest and where he had gone again some five weeks ago when his suffering became almost unbearable. While there his ailment took a decided turn for the worse so that all hopes of recovery had to be abandoned. Fully realizing his critical condition, suffering patiently as always, his end in the presence of his family came peacefully Thursday, July 9, at 10:45 p.m., at the age of 65 years and 9 days.

Those who deeply mourn his departure are his wife, the children already mentioned, one son-in-law; one grandchild, Geraldine Hack; three sisters, Minnie, Mrs. H.F. Claus, of Beecher; Lydia, Mrs. L.S. Cole, of Steger; Clara, Mrs. Martin Peters, of Monee; one half-sister, Carrie Hoffman; one step-brother, John Hoffman, of Grant Park; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Henry C. Wehmhoefer obit 3Funeral services were conducted, Sunday afternoon, beginning at 1:30 at the home and continued at St. Lucas Church, where his pastor, Rev. G. Horst, spoke fitting words of comfort in both the German and English languages. A temporary installment of a microphone and loud-speaker making it possible to reach the vast number of relatives and friends who had come to pay their last respects to an honored friend. The many beautiful floral pieces also evidenced the high esteem and regard in which the departed was held by all who knew him. He was laid to rest in the Beecher Mausoleum.

In the passing of Mr. Wehmhoefer whose high ideals, integrity, fair-mindedness, and uprightness ever evoked confidence and trust, the community has suffered a distinct loss. By his loved ones and immediate relatives he will always be remembered as a wonderful husband, father and brother, whose every thought and effort was centered upon their happiness and comfort. His house was his castle, and his family the choicest possession within that castle. As a most faithful and loyal member of St. Lucas Church, he always stood ready to do his share; his memory will be cherished by all who still believe in Church and Kingdom work as he did. His faith, hope and love, deeply anchored in God’s words, enabled him to live and prove himself a true child of God, of whom it may be well said, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”

ACCIDENT ON THE MILWAUKEE ROAD

SPEEDER JUMPS THE TRACK AT CROSSING BETWEEN JUDY AND CRETE

MARTIN PETERS AND WM. C. STEADT, BOTH ROAD EMPLOYEES, ARE BADLY HURT

railroad speeder car

example of a railroad speeder car

While riding a speeder, this afternoon, Martin Peters and William C. Steadt were badly injured when the speeder jumped the track at a crossing, north-east of town, between Judy and Crete. It is not exactly known how the accident happened, but it is supposed that either a plank was loose at the crossing or a bar fell from the car and caused the derailment. The men were thrown violently to the ground.

The injured men were brought to their homes and Dr. Miley summoned who, upon examination, found that Mr. Peters had sustained a fractured wrist, a bad cut on the neck, which extended from ear to ear, was bruised about the chest, and otherwise injured. Mr. Steadt sustained an injury to the spine and also a badly bruised leg.

Just how serious the accident will determine we were unable, at this time, to learn.
