Joseph Hager obit

Neither Clara’s nor Joseph’s obituaries tell us that Clara’s brothers Walter, Charles, Arthur, Reinhold & Vernon lived with Clara and Joseph from 1918 thru 1940.

Walter was married in 1921 and left the family home.

Clara’s mother died in 1918, the year Clara married Joseph, and Clara & Joseph took over the care of the family.

Clara’s sister Elsie was married in 1914

Clara’s father Charles, the son of the first mayor of Crete, was tragically killed in a train crash in 1905.

Because Clara’s headstone, along with a large portion of the Horn family compartment within the mausoleum, was destroyed by vandals in the mid 1980’s, we are in the process of trying to obtain white Colorado Yule Quarry “Lincoln Gold Vein” marble needed to replace the missing panels.

More damage to the Horn Family Compartment.

Due to the damage, we aren’t certain which crypts contain the remains of Caroline, Arthur & Clara

Clara’s family members also resting in the mausoleum are:

Mother: Caroline “Lena” (Kappmeyer) Horn
Brother: Walter L. Horn
Brother: Reinhold W. Horn
Brother: Arthur H Horn
First Cousins 1x removed: Caroline “Carrie” L (Kappmeyer) Struve & Arthur Struve

According to newspaper accounts, Arthur Struve’s wife, Caroline Struve (nee Kappmeyer) and Clara Hager’s mother, Caroline “Lena” Horn (nee Kappmeyer) were first cousins.

“JUST MARRIED”

Herbert & Dorothy Saller - Just MarriedThe Fred W. Saller family received the surprise of their lives last week. Miss Lenore Saller brought home the mail from the post office, and in looking it over, she came to what looked like an invitation to some affair. She looked the envelope over, and on discovery, it was addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Saller and daughters (not family) the son being omitted. And in a regularly sisterly manner she began to laugh, and called out: “Ha! Herb, see, you are not invited!” Then she went on reading and in a twinkling of an eye, the sisterly giggle stopped, as she digested the contents, which read something like this: Mrs. Charles H.  Bahlman invites you to attend a marriage reception to be given at my home, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Saller, who were married on December 17, 1925. After Miss Lenore recovered her equilibrium, she passed the “surprise” invitation over to her mother, and then the father. They looked at the invitation – then at Herbie – and Herbie fessed up. He and Miss Dorothy Bahlman of Beecher hid themselves away one cold December day, and were quietly made man and wife – and it was no one’s dumb business.

Well, all there is to it, although Herbie delayed divulging his little secret for almost one-half a year, we with a host of relatives and friends, join in wishing him and his charming little bride many years of happiness and prosperity.

I wish I was there, don’t you?

WHY ROHE IS A CANDIDATE

Gives Good Reasons for Aspiring for Legislative Honors

Every Voter Should Turn Out Next Tuesday and Help Elect Him

Why Rohe is a CandidateIn last week’s issue of the Joliet News, the Crete correspondent to that paper gave Mr. Rohe’s reasons for becoming a candidate for the legislature to succeed the late J.H. Alexander, and for which a special election will be held next Tuesday, March 11. Following is the clipping verbatim:

“Crete, Feb. 26. The candidacy of F.H. Rohe for the legislature to fill the vacancy caused by the death of J.H. Alexander, is the first in twenty years from the eastern part of Will County. This part has not been represented since Fred Wilke of Washington was elected. This is one of the reasons why Mr. Rohe, the candidate on the republican ticket, concluded to make the race. Mr. Rohe, however, has other reasons which he gave to the correspondent of the News in an interview last Monday, and which should receive consideration.”

“The county east of Joliet, he says, has more than double the number of townships than the entire county of DuPage, which is represented by Mr. Miller. By electing him to represent the east and McCabe of Lockport the west of the county, the district will be divided as it should be.”

“Referring to his record as a member of the county board, Mr. Rohe claims credit for having been a member of the special committee appointed for the purpose of forcing the Sanitary drainage district to pay its taxes as assessed against it, which means the payment of $8,000 to the town of Lockport, and establishes a precedent that the Sanitary district will have to pay such taxes in the future.”

“Rohe says he is and always was in Help Please…..

MRS. ROHE DIES IN HOSPITAL OF AUTO INJURIES

Operation To Ease Brain Pressure A Failure

Mrs. Rohe died - auto accident 1Injured more than ten days ago in an auto accident while on a tour of the state, Mrs. Fred B. Rohe, wife of the mayor of Crete, died last night in a hospital at Brownsville, Texas.

The immediate cause of Mrs. Rohe’s death, according to the report received here, was a second operation to remove the pressure of a fractured skull. The operation proved a complete failure, it was said, and Mrs. Rohe died almost before she could be removed from the operating table.

Present at the Brownsville hospital at the time of death were the husband and daughter, Mrs. Paul Monahan, of Crete. Mr. Rohe was slightly hurt in the same crash which caused his wife’s death. The daughter had been summoned to Texas as soon as it was known that the condition of the injured women was serious.

For nearly two weeks Mrs. Rohe had waged a constantly losing battle for her life. The skull fracture at first was thought to be slight, and it was hoped that she would survive. But an operation was soon found necessary, and although it proved partially successful, the patient failed to rally. Her condition soon became so critical as to lead to the second operation.

The accident which led to the fatal injury happened while Mr. and Mrs. Rohe were passengers in an auto owned and driven by a Chicago friend. As they were approaching the town of Harlingen, another auto is said to have driven suddenly across the highway directly into the path of their machine. A severe collision resulted, and the car in which the Rohes were seated hurtled off the road and overturned.

MAYOR SLIGHTLY HURT

Mrs. Rohe, auto accident 2None of the other passengers in the auto was seriously injured, although Mr. Rohe received treatment at the hospital. It was not known here whether the driver of the other car had been apprehended by police.

Following an inquest today, Mrs. Rohe’s remains were to be sent to Crete for final rites. The funeral plans were not complete. The dead women had been an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and it was thought services would be held there.

Mrs. Rohe was 55 years old and had lived throughout her life in the village of Crete. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Steege. Surviving in addition to the husband and daughter are one son, Otto F. Rohe, of Crete, and two brothers, Herman and Martin Steege, of Chicago.

Mrs. Rohe was active in social and club work both in Chicago Heights and in Crete. She was formerly an officer of the Crete Women’s club.
