January 8, 1920 – MATRIMONIAL :  HACK-WEHMHOEFER

Arthur & Ethal MatrimonialArthur Hack and Ethel Wehmhoefer were married Jan. 1, 1920 at St. Luke’s parsonage, Rev. G. Horst officiating.  Mr. and Mrs. George Heiden were sponsors. Following the wedding the couple boarded a train for Chicago.
The wedding was a surprise to all, even the parents of the bride, who were not informed of the event until the newlyweds arrived in Chicago, when they wired back the glad news.
Both bride and groom are well known in Beecher, where they were born and reared. They are popular and Arthur Hack and Ethel Wehmhoeferesteemed young people and their many friends wish them the best there is in their wedded life.
The groom is the son of Mrs. Ed. Ohlendorf of near Goodenow, and the bride the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wehmhoefer of Beecher.
We understand the young couple will make their home in Chicago Heights, where Mr. Hack has employment as city mail carrier.
The Beecher Herald extends congratulations.

(Editor’s note: Arthur’s mother is listed in error; she was Emma (Katz) Hack Heller, not Mrs. Ed Ohlendorf)

NOVEMBER 5, 1909 – BEECHER HERALD – IN SOCIAL CIRCLES

1909 Halloween postcardMr. and Mrs. S.R. Stites and Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Heldt entertained about 50 of their married friends at a Halloween party, Saturday evening. The party gathered at the home of Mrs. H. Bielfeldt at 7:30 o’clock and from there ambled around in an effort to locate where the function proper would take place. When they arrived at the Stites home they were directed through the dimly lighted rooms, following a narrow roped passage to the basement. Before reaching their destination, however, they heard weird and hideous noises that fairly made the cold chills creep up and down their spinal columns. The basement was in utter darkness, but a match was brought into play and jack-o-lanterns and lighted candles soon illuminated the room, when it was found tables were set with plenty of good things to eat that would even tempt a ghost. Unique and appropriate decorations adorned the tables. Large jack-o-lanterns were placed in the center of the tables, while at each plate there were small candles with carrots as candlesticks. Alongside of each plate were also small turnips filled with assorted candies. Even the paper napkins were adorned with a pumpkin face and a witch, appropriate to the occasion. After satisfying the inner man – at which the writer must confess we overdone it – 1909 Halloween Good Witchthe happy throng were escorted to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Heldt, where they found the rooms tastily decorated with corn stalks and autumn leaves. Here games, vocal and instrumental music, dancing and general merriment prevailed and each guest seemed to enjoy an equal share of the fun. At midnight the good witch made her visit with a kettle of sparkling grape juice just to put on the finishing touch, and shortly afterward the party dispersed, regretting that it had “got late late so early”. The ladies, Mesdames Stites and Heldt, are charming entertainers and are deserving of much praise for their party on Saturday evening, which was so successfully carried out.
Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Lake of Chicago were the only out-of-town guests.

January 1910, Fred resigned his position as rural mail carrier and was succeeded by his brother Louis E. Heldt.

May 1910 Fred E. and his brother Charles E. Heldt purchased the Cloidt grain elevator for $8,500. They also purchased the Cloidt residence for $5,000.

1915 to 1923 Fred managed the Farmers Grain Company.

He was also Justice of the Peace in the Beecher area for 15 years, a deputy sheriff of Will County for four years, a policeman in Lansing for two years, central committeeman for the Republican party for many years, first president of the area chapter of the Modern Woodmen of America, and president of the former Beecher Commercial Club.  Mr. Heldt also served St. John’s United Church of Christ in many capacities.

MAY 26, 1911 – BEECHER HERALD – RETURN FROM IOWA VISIT

Fred Heldt and Family Return From an Enjoyable Vacation

Gives Interesting Story of His Trip and Country, Visited

Fred Heldt Iowa visit 1911Fred E. Heldt and family have returned from a week’s vacation spent in Iowa. They report having immensely enjoyed their visit. Mr. Heldt relates his experience during his stay: “We left Beecher on May 13 and arrived at Waverly, Iowa, at 6:13 Saturday evening, where we were met by our cousin, C.C. Treaton, who is a noted farmer of Bremer County, Iowa. The following Monday we went with Mr. Treaton to a farmer’s creamery at Artesian, of which Mr. Treaton is secretary and manager. The creamery handled 540,000 pounds of milk last month and has 80 milk customers. They pay 89 cents for milk and receive 22 cents a pound for butter. From there we went to the homes of Carl, Louis and John Pries and August Thiemann, who are engaged in hog raising, They have from 20 to 60 brood sows each, and it is considered no trick at all to ship from one to fifteen cars of hogs a week by buyers at this point. On Friday, May 19, we left for Sumner to make a short visit with our uncle, Mr. Carl Priece, and on Saturday we left for West Union to visit our Aunt, Mrs. H. Schroeder, and cousins, Wm. Schroeder and Emil Heldt. The latter is well known in this community and sends his regards to all enquiring friends. The country at West Union, Fayette County, is more rolling than that at Bremer. Mr. Heldt and Mr. Schroeder are engaged in raising cattle and sheep. Crops looked good at all points we visited. Corn had already been worked once and oats, wheat and hay were knee deep. Prices for wheat was $1.05; corn .55c; hay $13; hogs $7.90; butter, 23c, and eggs, 13c.”                     Fred E. Heldt

OBITUARY

Beecher Herald – July 15, 1948

Louis Fick

Louis Fick Obit, Page 1The departed, Louis Fick, son of Johann Fick and his wife, Mary nee Knoll, long deceased, was born, June 4, 1861 in Mecklenburgh, Germany.  He was soon after birth received into the fellowship of the Christian church through the holy rites of baptism.  When he was four years old, his parents immigrated to this country and settled on a farm, 3 1/2 miles southeast of Beecher.  Soon afterwards, they became members of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church, east of Beecher, where the deceased, following a course of religious instruction, was confirmed, April 9, 1876, by the late Rev. Keuchen as one of a class of twenty-three.  On Oct. 25, 1888, he was united in holy wedlock with Miss Maria Heldt, the ceremony taking place in St. John’s Church with the late Rev. G. Koch officiating.  This happy union was blessed with three children, of whom one, a boy, died shortly after birth.  The surviving children, who deeply mourn the passing of a kind, loving father, are Emma, Mrs. John Lange, Beecher; and Amanda, Mrs. Ben Johnson, also of Beecher.  Immediately after their marriage, the young couple took up farming on the County Line on a farm known as the Fick homestead.  While living here, they were faithful and loyal members of St. John’s Church.  After 27 years of successful farming, they acquired and made their home on the southeast edge of Beecher adjoining the Dixie Highway.  Here they were privileged to enjoy many carefree and happy years until Jan. 28, 1937, when the loving wife and mother was called into the better life.  Deeply grieved, the departed carried on in Christian faith and fortitude, always enjoying the best of health and loving care of his daughter, Amanda.

About a month ago, advanced age complications began to undermine his health.  In order that the best of medical skill might be given him, his doctor, a little better than two weeks ago, suggested that he be taken to the Hazelcrest Hospital.  However, it soon became apparent that there could and would be no recovery.  And thus, Wed., July 7, around noon, his life came to a peaceful end at the ripe age of 87 years, 1 month and 3 days.

Louis Fick Obit, Page 2He leaves to mourn his passing the two daughters already mentioned; two sons-in-law; a grandchild, Leonard Lange; two brothers-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at Hack’s Funeral Home, Saturday, July 10, beginning at 1:30 p.m., and continued at St. Luke’s Church where Rev. G. Horst spoke fittingly to a fine gathering of relatives and friends.  The following, under the direction of Mrs. Rose Hunte, rendered three appropriate songs: Mrs. Leona Henerberg, Mrs. Violett Meeter and Mrs. Ester Braun.  Beautiful floral pieces eloquently spoke of the esteem in which the aged pilgrim was held.  He was placed to rest in the Beecher Mausoleum.

The deceased, as husband and father, gave his best to his family and home.  As a Christian, former member of St. John’s and later member of St. Luke’s Church, Beecher, he ever proved his sincerity, loyalty and interest, not only in almost regularly attending services, but also in contributing liberally towards the church and its larger kingdom work.  As a friend and neighbor, he was ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed.

Because of his morally clean, fine Christian life, he was honored and respected throughout his long life by all who knew him.  By way of farewell, we quote Isaiah 12, verse 2, 3: “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Jehovah, even Jehovah, is my strength and song and He is become my salvation.” – Contributed.

KAPPE FARM SCENE OF DISASTEROUS FIRE

George Kappe - Fire 7-1930Early Saturday morning, the Beecher Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call from the farm home of George Kappe, just south of town, when the large barn, tool shed and corn crib were ablaze. The fire had gained such headway before it was discovered, that none of the three buildings could be saved, so efforts were turned towards protecting those remaining. How the fire originated remains unknown, although it is thought that it was caused by spontaneous combustion in the hay, due to the excessive heat the preceding days.

The Kappe family were not aware of the fire until aroused by two men who were driving past in a truck. Noticing that there was no one about the blaze, they turned in the alarm.

The Kappe entails a heavy loss besides the buildings destroyed. About 30 tons of hay, 800 bushels of corn, 2 horses and some farm machinery were also burned. A tractor and an automobile were saved. We understand the loss is partially covered by insurance.

OBITUARY

Mrs. George (Minnie) Kappe

Minnie Kappe obit 1The departed, Mrs. Minnie Kappe, nee Ristenpart, daughter of Fred Ristenpart and his wife, Louise Ortung, both deceased, was born, March 19, 1877, two miles south of Beecher. The child of Christian parents, she was soon after birth, received into the family of the children of God through baptism. Later in life, following a course of religious instruction, she was confirmed with others, March 30, 1890, in St. John’s Evan. & Reformed Church by the late Rev. G. Koch. On March 15, 1899, she was, in the same church and by the same pastor, united in holy wedlock with Mr. George Kappe, which happy union was blessed with four children, of whom, one, Erna, six days after birth, preceded the parents in death. The surviving children, who now deeply mourn the passing of a fine loving mother are: Regina, (Mrs. Henry Krueger), Clear Lake, Iowa; Henry, Beecher; Harriet, (Mrs. Russell Piper), Beecher.

Minnie Kappe obit 2Immediately after marriage, the young couple engaged in farming on the present home site where their combined labors were signally blessed throughout the years, granting them a care-free life. When on Feb. 27, 1941, the loving husband and father was called to his eternal rest, the departed remained on the homestead, happy in the loving care and attention given her on the part of her loved ones, and especially cheered and comforted by a late visit of her daughter, Regina. She nevertheless longed for and prayed to be taken to her eternal home.  This desire was deepened after partaking of the Lord’s Supper and consenting to be taken to the Hazel Crest Hospital, upon suggestion of her doctor, where as she had long desired, she peacefully fell asleep, Wed., March 3, at 7:55 p.m. at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 14 days.

She leaves to mourn, her children already mentioned, 6 grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, 2 brothers-in-law, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted, Sat. March 6, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Hack Funeral Home and continued at St. Luke’s Church where her pastor Rev. G. Horst, spoke consolingly to a large concourse of relatives and friends. A choir composed of Mrs. George Ostermeyer and daughter, Delphene, Mrs. Henry Meeter, Mrs. Vern Henerberg and Mrs. William Selk, rendered three appropriate songs, accompanied by Mrs. Rose Hunte. Many beautiful floral pieces gave eloquent evidence of the very high esteem in which she was held by those who knew her. She was laid to rest in the Beecher Mausoleum.

The departed, always doing what she could as wife and mother, for which double role she was especially gifted with a beautiful love, sympathetic understanding and rare patience, was deeply rooted in the Word of God, which nourished and strengthened her faith and hope. As an active, loyal member of St. Luke’s Church and the Women’s Guild, she never failed in willingly and liberally upholding both as also the larger kingdom work in its various branches. Thus living a full, rich, Christian life here on earth, ever drawn by the loving kindness of her heavenly Father (Jeremiah 31:3) we may well bid her farewell in the comfort and hope that the everlasting love of her heavenly Father and the glory of her Savior eternally enfold her.

AGED CITIZEN PASSED AWAY, LAST THURSDAY

Emma Matthies obit 1Mrs. Emma Matthias, 80, well known citizen of this community, passed away at her home on the Peotone Road, west of Beecher, last Thursday night.

Funeral services were conducted at the late residence and following at St. Lucas Ev. and Reformed Church, Monday afternoon. Burial was in the Mausoleum. Rev. G. Horst officiated.

Obituary

Eddie Matthias obit 2The departed, Mrs. William (Emma) Matthies, nee Huenerberg, the daughter of Henry and Rosina Huenerberg, both deceased, was born, 3 miles west of Beecher, April 12, 1867. The child of Christian parents, she was soon after birth, baptized and later, following a course of thorough religious instruction, confirmed with others in St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, northwest of Beecher.

On Nov. 14, 1885, she was united in holy wedlock with Mr. William Matthies, the ceremony taking place in the aforementioned church, the late Rev. A.H. Brauer officiating. This happy union was blessed with the following children: Alvina (Mrs. Carl Clausing), Beecher; William, Beecher; Ida (Mrs. Ernest Hannover) Beecher; Sophie (Mrs. William Buhr), Beecher; Tillie (Mrs. Otto Jaeger), Detroit; Melinda (Mrs. Martin Oldenburg); Edward, who passed away, Dec. 19, 1941. Immediately after their marriage, the young couple engaged in farming – first four years, 3 miles west of Beecher, then four years near Goodenow and since then on the present homestead. Both being deeply interested in farming and faithfully applying themselves to their work their labors were signally blessed by God. Deeply enjoying their life it was granted them to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1935 in the midst of their children and many friends. Two years later, however, Jan 11, 1937, the loving husband and father was peacefully called to his eternal rest. Deeply feeling the loss of a devoted husband, the departed continued on the farm which her son, William, had taken over. Always active, there came a marked let-up due to slowly dwindling strength during the last four months. About two weeks ago, her condition became such that she needed the constant care and attention of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. William Matthies, who together with the other daughters of the departed as well as the husbands, lovingly watched over her until she took her last breath, Thursday Jan. 8, at 6:45 p.m., at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 26 days.

She leaves to mourn her passing the children already mentioned, 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, 2 daughters-in-law, 4 sons-in-law, a sister, Mrs. Minnie Langton, Chicago; a brother, Charles, Hannover, Kansas and a host of other relatives and friends.

Emma Matthies obit 3Funeral services were conducted, Monday, Jan. 12, beginning at 1:30 p.m., at the late residence and continued at St. Luke’s Church where her pastor, Rev. G. Horst, spoke to a large gathering of relatives and friends. Three appropriate songs were rendered by the following: Mrs. Hilda Boysen, Mrs. Vernon Henerberg, Mrs. Mildred Selk and Mrs. Esther Braun. Beautiful floral pieces attested to the esteem in which the departed was held by all who knew her intimately. She was laid to rest in the Mausoleum.

The departed, as loving wife and mother, always blessed with the best of health, gave unstintingly of her care, strength and labor to her loved ones. Ever true to her Christian upbringing, she, as a member of St. Luke’s Church, and until recently as a member of its Women’s Guild, seldom missed attending the services and meetings and was always found willing and ready to contribute her share towards the welfare of her church and its larger kingdom work. Thus, following the steady inner light of faith, hope and love, may she now happily realize finding her name written in Heaven in the Book of Life – Luke 10, v 20.

Help PleaseNote: You may notice that Emma’s and William’s names are spelled with an “e” in Matthies, and their son Eddie’s name is spelled with an “a” in Matthias. I have found in my research the spelling changes on different documents. I do not know which is correct, or if there was an error made on their headstones. If you can help confirm the correct spelling, please let us know.

SERVICES FOR MRS. H. WEHMHOEFER, JAN. 2

Augusta Wehmhoefer obit 1Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Henry Wehmhoefer by Rev. G. Horst, Saturday, Jan. 2, beginning at 1:30 pm in the Hack Funeral Home and continued in St. Luke’s Evangelical and Reformed Church where a large gathering of relatives and friends assembled to pay their last respects.  Interment was in the Mausoleum.

Mrs. Wehmhoefer had been in poor health for some time and suffered a stroke several weeks ago.  She was taken to Hazel Crest Hospital where she passed away, last week, Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 7:30 pm at the age of 74 years.  Obituary appears elsewhere in this issue.

OBITUARY – Mrs. Henry Augusta Wehmhoefer

Augusta Wehmhoefer obit 2The departed, Mrs. Henry Wehmhoefer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wehling, both deceased, was born, Aug. 26, 1873, on Old Wehling homestead, 3 miles southeast of Beecher.  Being the child of Christian parents, she was soon after birth received into the christian church through the holy rites of baptism in the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Petersburg.  Following a course of religious instruction in the great fundamentals of our christian religion, she was confirmed with others in the same church, April 3, 1887, by the late Rev. H. Gose.  On Sept. 24, 1895, she was united in holy wedlock with Mr. Henry Wehmhoefer, the ceremony taking place in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chicago, the late Rev. J.C. Nuetzel officiating.  This happy union was blessed with four children, of whom one, Harold, in 1905, preceded the parents in death.  The surviving children, who deeply mourn the passing of a true loving mother, are: Ethel, Mrs. Arthur Hack; Lawrence and Howard, all of Beecher.  Immediately after their marriage the young couple established their home in Beecher, where the young husband bought and successfully operated the well known Wehmhoefer Hardware Store. Wehmhoefer Hardware.resized Gifted with rare business acumen, he later acquired the Tatge Garage on the Dixie Highway, which also crowned his foresight and ability.  Because of his many sterling qualities and his deep interest in community welfare, he not only served as president of the school board, but also, for many years, as president of the Farmers State Bank.Henry Wehmhoefer garage off Dixie Highway

Sharing this happy, busy, successful life, the departed, together with her children, was deeply grieved when July 9, 1936, following a long  siege of painful illness, her husband was called to eternal rest. Finding comfort and strength in her faith, she lovingly carried on her duties as mother, deeply interested in the welfare of her children and with millions of other mothers silently bearing the anxiety and strain of the late World War in which her son, Howard, also took part as an officer of the air force.  Deeply grateful and happy over his safe return, she nevertheless began to show reactions of the ordeal and became more or less dependent upon the loving attention and care of her children, especially the care and attention given her by her daughter, Ethel, Mrs. Arthur Hack, who did everything possible to brighten and cheer her.  However, it became more and more apparent that her strength was rapidly failing and thus when she suffered a stroke a little better than two weeks ago, the doctors could offer but little hope for recovery, yet hoping against hope, they had her transferred to the Hazel Crest Hospital, Tuesday, to do everything possible known to medical science, but God in his wisdom and love granted her a peaceful exit out of this life the same day, Dec. 30, 1947, at 7:30 pm, at the age of 74 years, 4 months and 4 days.

Augusta Wehmhoefer obit 3She leaves to mourn her passing, the children already mentioned; one son-in-law, 2 daughters-in-law, 2 grandchildren, one great grandchild, 2 brothers, 6 sisters-in-law, Mrs. Sophie Wehling, Mrs. Wm. Wehling, Mrs. Leonard Cole, Mrs. Ed. Wehmhoefer, Mrs. Martin Peters and Miss Carrie Hoffman; one brother-in-law, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted, Saturday, Jan. 2. beginning at 1:30 pm at Hack Funeral Home and continued at St. Luke’s Church where Rev. G. Horst, her pastor, spoke fittingly to the relatives and a large gathering of friends.  The following: Mrs. Leona Huenerberg, Mrs. Violet Meeter, Mrs. Mildred Elk, Mrs. Marie Ostermeyer and Mrs. Hilda Boyens, sang three appropriate songs.  The many exceptionally beautiful floral pieces and numerous memorial wreaths attest to the esteem in which the deceased was held.  She was laid to rest in the Beecher Mausoleum.

The departed, a loving wife and mother, was always deeply attached to her home and loved ones: as a child of God and Christian, she ever remained true to her Christian upbringing and training, being a member of St. Luke’s Church and its Women’s Guild and at all times being found willing in supporting her church and the kingdom work at large.  Not given much to the vanities of life, she sought and longed for the deeper life promised to all the children of God.  Realizing her life here upon earth was drawing to a close, she, in faith and hope looked forward to the day that shall endless be in the presence of God.
