Obituary

Henry Helmuth William Ernest Christ Bohl, son of Henry and Minnie Bohl, was born on the Bohl homestead in Washington Township, March 9, 1873. He was confirmed in the Christian faith, April 3, 1887, at St. John’s Evangelical Church of Beecher by Pastor Gustav Koch. On February 9, 1898, Mr. Bohl was united in marriage to Miss Sophie Blievernicht. The couple enjoyed many years of happy married life. In 1948, they observed their 50th wedding anniversary. They lived on the Bohl homestead for 28 years, moving to Beecher in 1927.

Mr. Bohl became ill May 23rd. He was taken to the Hazelcrest Hospital and submitted to an operation, May 26th. Due to advanced age, he failed to gain strength and was called from this life, Sunday, June 1, at 5:30 p.m. He is survived by his wife and 23 nephews and 14 nieces.

Mr. Bohl was well and favorably known in this community. He was faithful to the vows taken at his confirmation and was an active member of his church throughout his lifetime. He was a member of St. John’s Church of Beecher for many years. He served as trustee for 12.5 years. On moving to Beecher, he joined the St. Luke’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1928. He was a regular in attendance and sincere in the profession of his faith. In Revelation 2:10, we find a passage which is a fitting commentary on his life and faith, “Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life.”

Editor’s notes: Henry’s father Heinrich Sr. lived with Henry & Sophie from the time of their marriage to the time of his death in 1921.

OBITUARY

Louis Fick

Louis Fick Obit, Page 1The departed, Louis Fick, son of Johann Fick and his wife, Mary nee Knoll, long deceased, was born, June 4, 1861 in Mecklenburgh, Germany.  He was soon after birth received into the fellowship of the Christian church through the holy rites of baptism.  When he was four years old, his parents immigrated to this country and settled on a farm, 3 1/2 miles southeast of Beecher.  Soon afterwards, they became members of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church, east of Beecher, where the deceased, following a course of religious instruction, was confirmed, April 9, 1876, by the late Rev. Keuchen as one of a class of twenty-three.  On Oct. 25, 1888, he was united in holy wedlock with Miss Maria Heldt, the ceremony taking place in St. John’s Church with the late Rev. G. Koch officiating.  This happy union was blessed with three children, of whom one, a boy, died shortly after birth.  The surviving children, who deeply mourn the passing of a kind, loving father, are Emma, Mrs. John Lange, Beecher; and Amanda, Mrs. Ben Johnson, also of Beecher.  Immediately after their marriage, the young couple took up farming on the County Line on a farm known as the Fick homestead.  While living here, they were faithful and loyal members of St. John’s Church.  After 27 years of successful farming, they acquired and made their home on the southeast edge of Beecher adjoining the Dixie Highway.  Here they were privileged to enjoy many carefree and happy years until Jan. 28, 1937, when the loving wife and mother was called into the better life.  Deeply grieved, the departed carried on in Christian faith and fortitude, always enjoying the best of health and loving care of his daughter, Amanda.

About a month ago, advanced age complications began to undermine his health.  In order that the best of medical skill might be given him, his doctor, a little better than two weeks ago, suggested that he be taken to the Hazelcrest Hospital.  However, it soon became apparent that there could and would be no recovery.  And thus, Wed., July 7, around noon, his life came to a peaceful end at the ripe age of 87 years, 1 month and 3 days.

Louis Fick Obit, Page 2He leaves to mourn his passing the two daughters already mentioned; two sons-in-law; a grandchild, Leonard Lange; two brothers-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at Hack’s Funeral Home, Saturday, July 10, beginning at 1:30 p.m., and continued at St. Luke’s Church where Rev. G. Horst spoke fittingly to a fine gathering of relatives and friends.  The following, under the direction of Mrs. Rose Hunte, rendered three appropriate songs: Mrs. Leona Henerberg, Mrs. Violett Meeter and Mrs. Ester Braun.  Beautiful floral pieces eloquently spoke of the esteem in which the aged pilgrim was held.  He was placed to rest in the Beecher Mausoleum.

The deceased, as husband and father, gave his best to his family and home.  As a Christian, former member of St. John’s and later member of St. Luke’s Church, Beecher, he ever proved his sincerity, loyalty and interest, not only in almost regularly attending services, but also in contributing liberally towards the church and its larger kingdom work.  As a friend and neighbor, he was ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed.

Because of his morally clean, fine Christian life, he was honored and respected throughout his long life by all who knew him.  By way of farewell, we quote Isaiah 12, verse 2, 3: “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Jehovah, even Jehovah, is my strength and song and He is become my salvation.” – Contributed.

OBITUARY – JOHN HENRY LOUIS PRALLE

Louis Pralle obit 2The departed, John Henry Louis Pralle, son of Henry and Wilhelmina nee Stradtmann, Pralle. both deceased, was born Oct. 27, 1869, on the Pralle homestead, 2 miles southeast of this village. On February 20, 1870, he was baptized in St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church by Rev. F.G. Reinecke and thus received into the family of the children of God. Following instruction in the great fundamentals of our Christian religion, he was confirmed with a class of 28 in the above mentioned church by Rev. G. Koch.

On October 18, 1897, he was united in holy wedlock with Miss Minnie Mausehund, which union had six children, of whom one, in infancy, preceded the father in death. The surviving children, who mourn the passing of a kind and loving father, are: William, Beecher, Esther, Mrs. Rueben Lankanau, Peotone; Lydia, Chicago Heights; Leo and Alice, Beecher.

Immediately after marriage, the young couple settled on the old Pralle homestead where both of them occupied themselves diligently in the various arduous tasks of farming and were signally blessed in their efforts. On November 12, 1942, the shadows of death closed in on the family in the passing of the loving wife and mother. Continuing on the farm with his children, the departed, gradually failing in health, which two weeks ago took a decided turn for the worse, consented to be taken to St. James Hospital, Chicago Heights, where in spite of the best of medical skill and nursing he peacefully came to the end of his pilgrimage on Saturday, January 20, at 2:00 a.m., at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 23 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing, the children already mentioned, two sisters, Mrs. Lena Ballascher, Chicago Heights and Mrs. Louisa Seitz of Beecher; two brothers, August and William, both of Peotone; one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, two grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted, Tuesday, at 1:30 p.m., at the Hack Funeral Home, where Rev. G. Horst spoke fittingly to a large gathering of relatives and friends. A duet by Mrs. Harry Fick and pastor was rendered with Mrs. Henry Meeter as accompanist on the piano. A memorial wreath and beautiful floral pieces spoke well in memory of the departed. He was laid to rest in the Beecher Mausoleum.

The deceased, in spite of much affliction, possessed a kind, generous heart, which not only expanded itself as to his loved ones, but also readily responded whenever called upon by friends and neighbors. As a lifelong member of St. Luke’s congregation, he was never appealed to in vain towards the upkeep of his church and the building of the kingdom of God at large. Thus having shared with us the blessed knowledge of our Christian religion, its exhortations, promises, may he now experience, as we all some day hope to experience, the abundant grace of God.

OBITUARY

Beecher Herald – January 14, 1937

Mrs. Louis Fick

Mary Fick Obit, page 1The departed, Mrs. Louis Fick, nee Maria Heldt, daughter of William and Hannah Heldt, both deceased, was born, Feb. 6, 1866, at Downers Grove.  The child of Christian parents, she was soon after birth received into the larger family of the children of God through the holy rite of Baptism.  When her parents, a few years later, located near Beecher and became affiliated with the St. John’s Church, she received the religious instruction and was confirmed in that church by the Rev. E. Keuchen, March 21, 1880.  On October 25, 1888, she was also married in the same church to Mr. Louis Fick, Rev. G Koch officiating.  This happy union was blessed with three children, one of whom a boy, died shortly after birth.  The surviving children, who with their father deeply mourn the passing of a loving wife and mother, are Emma, Mrs. John Lange; and Amanda, Mrs. Ben Johnson, both near and in Beecher.  Immediately after their marriage, the young couple engaged in farming on the county line, about 3 ½ miles southeast of Beecher.  After twenty seven years of successful farming, they acquired and made their home on the southeastern edge of town, adjoining the Dixie Highway.

Not quite well in late years, the intensive heat of last summer aggravated her real trouble to such an extent that she was unable to perform her household duties.  Given the best of medical care and every loving attention on the part of her husband and children, she, at times seemed to rally but not sufficient to give any hope for recovery.  Even so, her sudden end, Friday morning, at six o’clock, came as a distinct shock to her loved ones and a large circle of friends in and near Beecher.  The days of her earthly sojourn number 71 years, 11 months and 2 days.

Those who deeply mourn her passing are the husband, the two daughters and sons-in-law, already mentioned; one grandchild, Leonard Lange; one sister, Mrs. Wm. Klemme, Hanover Township, Ind.; four brothers, Charles, Herman, John, near Beecher, and Emil, Oelwein, Ia.; and a large host of other relatives and friends.

Louis Fick Obit, Page 2Funeral services were conducted, Sunday, beginning at 1:30 at the house and continued at St. Luke’s Church at 1:50, where her pastor, Rev. G. Horst, spoke fitting words of comfort in both the German and English languages.  The members of St. Luke’s Ladies Aid, in which organization the deceased held membership, rendered two appropriate songs.  Beautiful floral pieces and a very large gathering of friends testified to the high esteem in which the departed was held by all who knew her.  She was laid to rest in the Beecher Mausoleum.

As a wife and mother, the departed gave gladly, freely and fully of her love, strength and time to her loved ones and always delighted in serving all who entered her friendly, hospitable home.  As a child of God she loved his Word and the place where his glory dwelleth, and found much inspiration in attending divine services.  As a former member of St. Luke’s Ladies’ Aid, she was ever Kingdom minded and gladly contributed her share of the blessings received.  Well knowing that her earthly days were numbered she together with her husband, only last Sunday, partook of the Lord’s Supper.  In bidding her farewell, we may comfort ourselves in the thought and hope that she is forever realizing her Saviour’s promise: “I go to prepare a place for you, etc. John 14.

OBITUARY

CHARLES BESEKE SR.

Charles (Carl) Beseke obit 1-25-1934The departed, Charles Beseke, was born April 15, 1870, one mile southwest of Beecher. On June 6, 1870, he was baptized in the name of the Triune God by Rev. Gotlieb Reinecke and thus received into the family of the children of God. Following a period of instruction in the great fundamentals of the Christian religion, he was confirmed by the Rev. G. Koch, March 31, 1895.

On Feb. 15, 1894, he was married to Miss Margreta Tobeck, the ceremony taking place at Chicago. This happy union was blessed with seven children, one of whom, Mary, in infancy preceded the father in death. The surviving children, who together with the mother deeply mourn the departure of a faithful, loving husband and father, are: Louis, Fred, Charles Jr., Frieda, and Elmer of Beecher and Meta, Mrs. Martin Paul of Grant Park. Following their marriage the young couple engaged in farming opposite the old Beseke homestead. Diligently and faithfully applying themselves to their chosen work, their labors were bountifully blessed, bringing them peace and contentment. Always in the best of health a slight stroke some twelve years ago slowly began to undermine and sap his strength. Within the last six years, while making their home here in Beecher, his physical and mental condition became such that he was practically an invalid. About two weeks ago his condition gradually grew worse, and although everything possible in the way of medical skill and loving care was done, he peacefully closed his eyes in death, Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 3:30 a.m., at the age of 63 years, 9 months and 1 day.  In honor and to the great credit of his family it must be said that during his many years of illness he was given the very best of attention and care by his loved ones especially by his wife, who was untiring in her loving ministrations. He leaves to mourn, his wife, the children already mentioned, one sister, Mrs. Kirchhoff, Sollitt; two brothers, Henry, Alpha, Minn., and George, Beecher, three grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted, Friday, Jan. 19, beginning at 1:30 o’clock at the home and continued at St. Luke’s Church, where his pastor, Rev. G. Horst, spoke words of comfort in both German and English. Offerings of sympathy in the form of flowers and a monetary gift, in memory of the departed, by his brother, George, for charitable purposes, featured a new way of showing esteem of the deceased. Burial was in the Beecher Mausoleum.

The departed, always a respected citizen of the community, was fair, honest and upright in all his dealings, dependable and loyal to all his friends. In the role of a husband and father he was lovingly concerned about the welfare and happiness of those whom God had entrusted to him. Blessed with earthly means the departed always stood ready to uphold the church and charitable institutions fostered by the church.

This change improved his health greatly while the illness of his wife developed into great seriousness. Recently his old ailment appeared and quickly developed into “uremia”. He was taken to the hospital, Monday afternoon in much pain. He passed away, Wednesday morning, at 12:25 p.m. at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 7 days.

OBITUARY – MRS. EVA HACK

Eva Hack obitThe departed, Mrs. Eva Friederica Maria Dorothea Hack, nee Ruge, daughter of Charles and Wilhelmina Rufe nee Zirzow, was born, June 24, 1860, at West Chicago in DuPage Co. Being the child of Christian parents, she was in early infancy placed in the arms of her Saviour through baptism in a Lutheran church at Downers Grove. When she was about five years old her parents moved to a farm, west of Goodenow, residing there two years, after which they established the so-called Ruge homestead, five miles south-east of here. Her parents having united with the St. John’s congregation gave the departed every opportunity to gain a thorough religious education so that, March 29, 1874, in the hour of her confirmation and in the presence of her pastor, Rev. Keuchen, and a large congregation she could gladly and gratefully promise allegiance to her Master.

On Sept. 28, 1876, she was united in marriage with Herman Hack, Rev. Keuchen officiating. This happy union was blessed with twelve children, of whom three – Henry, Cynthia and William, preceded the mother in death. The surviving children, who deeply mourn the departure of a loving mother, are: Emma, Mrs. George Klein, Chicago; Minnie, Mrs. Mauirce Howe, Chicago, Amanda, Mrs. Herman Graves, of Crown Point; Alvina; John of Peotone; Talitha, Mrs. William Becker, Peotone; and Amelia, Malinda and Evaline. May also be mentioned here that one grandchild, Mamie Graves, fully shared in a mother’s love with these children.

Immediately after marriage the young couple engaged in farming on the Hack homestead, southeast of town. After thirteen years on this farm they moved to Cissna Park, where for four years they followed the same occupation. Returning to Beecher they lived for one year on the so-called Many farm, after which they re-settled on the old homestead.

In 1912 they gave up farming and came to Beecher where Mr. Hack until Jan. 1, 1923 acquired and successfully conducted his brother Frank’s store. On Feb. 19, 1926, he was quite unexpectedly called to his eternal reward. Following the death of her husband, the departed continued to live in her home on Indiana Street where her daughter, Malinda, and her granddaughter, Mamie Graves, made her life as pleasant and comfortable as they possibly could. Eva Hack obit 2Having failed in health for some time but without due cause for alarm it came as a distinct shock to her loved ones and the community when, Thursday morning, March 23, a paralytic stroke brought her to the very door of death. A doctor and the children being immediately summoned, it soon became apparent that medical skill and loving care on the part of the daughters, her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gertrude Hack, and Miss Verna Adolph would prove of no avail. Thus, Sunday morning, March 26, at 8:06, she peacefully closed her eyes in death at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 2 days. Those deeply mourning her passing are the children already mentioned, three brothers and Emil of Lowell, Indiana; one sister, Alvina, Mrs. Otto Knuth of Chicago; two daughters-in-law; twenty-six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted, Wed. March 29, at 1:30 p.m., at the house, Rev. Horst officiating and Mrs. Adkins rendering a solo. Services were conducted at St. Luke’s Church, where her pastor spoke the German and English languages to a very large attendance. In addition, the Ladies Aid of which Mrs. Hack had been an active member, sang two appropriate songs. Mrs. Adkins also sang two heart-touching solos. Rev. Thomas Adkins, Crown Point, Ind., pastor of Mrs. Graves, who was too ill to attend her mother’s funeral, offered a consoling prayer. Many beautiful floral pieces gave ample evidence of the esteem in which the departed was held by all who knew her. She was buried in the mausoleum. The pallbearers were: Arthur Hack, Arthur Ruge, Dr. E.C. Hack, Wesley Ruge, Leslie Schultz, Irwin Loitz, Wm. Meyer and Otto Meyer. The grandchildren served as flower carriers.

In the passing of Mrs. Hack, a life enriched by loving service has come to its eternal reward. As a true loving wife and mother she gave a worthy example of the real beauty of Christian faith, love and hope, delighting in the manifold labors which brought comfort and happiness to her loved ones. As a child of God she found rare pleasure in the word of God, and was at all times deeply interested in her church and the larger kingdom work. As a neighbor and friend she will long be remembered because of her ready sympathy and help. Thus it may be said of her– Rev. 14, verse 13. “And I heard a voice from Heaven saying: Write, Blessed are the dead who are in the Lord from henceforth: yea, sayeth the spirit that they may rest from their labors, for their works follow with them.”

OBITUARY – MRS. HENRY MEYER

Melsina Meyer obitMelsina Catharine Louise Meyer, nee Fiene, was born December 9, 1860, in the neighborhood west of Chicago, where her parents Fr. (Friedrich) Fiene and his wife lived at the time. Later when they moved into the neighborhood of Beecher they joined the St. John’s Church. Here in 1874, she was confirmed by Rev. E. Keuchen. In 1896, she was united in holy wedlock to Ferdinand Engelking, who died in 1894, leaving her a widow with four small children. After a widowship of one year and a half, in July, 1896, she entered into matrimony with Henry Meyer. To this union three children were born, two of whom died in infancy.

Mrs. Meyer has been ailing in health for several years, yet by her sunny disposition the burden was borne with a real Christian spirit. About a year ago, her health began to fail rapidly, and more so since early spring. Only for nine days was she favored to live in the beautiful new bungalow (139 Dixie Highway, Beecher, IL) which her husband built the past months. Visibly her condition became lower and at 5:20 p.m., August 1, she closed her eyes peacefully forever on this earth. She brought her age to 69 years, 8 months and 8 days.

Her departure is mourned by her husband and his son, Harry, and by her two daughters and two sons of her first union: Mrs. Gustav Dierking, Beecher; Mrs. Sophie Farrenkopf, Harvey; Karl Engelking, Beecher; and Fritz Engelking, Grant Park, besides 14 grandchildren, one sister; Mrs. Sophie Grages, Beecher, and one brother, Fred Fiene of Wells, Minnesota.

The funeral services were held on Monday, August 4, at the St. John’s Church, conducted by Rev. C. Nauerth, who spoke both in German and English words of comfort to the bereaved ones and exemplifying to the multitude her Christian character. The Ladies Aid Society sang two songs for their departed member. The pall bearers were Frank Hunte, Paul Adolph, Henry Deeke, Henry Bohl, Ed. Rehborg and Ed Grages. Interment took place at the Beecher Mausoleum.
