OBITUARY – WILLIAM PETERS
Funeral services were conducted a the Hack Funeral Chapel in Beecher on Sunday for William Peters, 17 West 32nd Street, Steger. The Rev. Armin Gottberg officiated, with burial in the Beecher Mausoleum.
Mr. Peters, a retired carpenter, died Thursday, Jan. 24, in St. James Hospital, Chicago Heights. He was born June 28, 1897, in Grant Park. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Steger.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Erwin (Verna) Ekhoff of Steger and Mrs. Joseph (Eleanor) Palanca of Crete; three sons, Rueben and Norman of Steger and William Jr., of Chicago Heights; 23 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Helen, nee Wehling, in 1948, his second wife Helen, nee Piepenbrink in 1963; one brother, and four sisters.

Mrs. William Peters, 48, died at her home on 17 West 32nd Street Monday evening after suffering a stroke while attending the Immanuel Lutheran Sunday School outing in Gardner’s Grove in Crete Sunday.
Mrs. William Peters, 48, sister-in-law of Mrs. Fred Heldt, who resided at 17 W. 32nd St., Steger, passed away in her home, Monday, at 11:00 p.m.
Edward John Wehmhoefer was born in Chicago, IL on Jan. 22, 1878, where also he was presented to God in Holy Baptism. The parents, locating at Beecher when he was a child, saw that he received catechetical instruction here and was confirmed by Rev. Koch. On March 5, 1905, he was untied in holy matrimony with Miss Charlotte Thiesfeld, Rev. Bierbaum officiating. To this union one son born, who together with his mother, mourns the departure of the father and husband. After living in Beecher some time, when he affiliated with the church, they went to Steger and from there moved to a farm near Monee about seven years ago.
(Editor’s note: There is more to Edward’s life than is written in his obituary. We also know that Edward, at age 22, along with his older brother William, worked at the Hoffman Saloon, owned by his mother Maria Wehmhoefer Hoffman, in 1900. The 1910 census indicated he was a bookkeeper in the Piano industry. His WW1 registration card and the 1920 census listed him as a general farmer)
