“JUST MARRIED”

Herbert & Dorothy Saller - Just MarriedThe Fred W. Saller family received the surprise of their lives last week. Miss Lenore Saller brought home the mail from the post office, and in looking it over, she came to what looked like an invitation to some affair. She looked the envelope over, and on discovery, it was addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Saller and daughters (not family) the son being omitted. And in a regularly sisterly manner she began to laugh, and called out: “Ha! Herb, see, you are not invited!” Then she went on reading and in a twinkling of an eye, the sisterly giggle stopped, as she digested the contents, which read something like this: Mrs. Charles H.  Bahlman invites you to attend a marriage reception to be given at my home, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Saller, who were married on December 17, 1925. After Miss Lenore recovered her equilibrium, she passed the “surprise” invitation over to her mother, and then the father. They looked at the invitation – then at Herbie – and Herbie fessed up. He and Miss Dorothy Bahlman of Beecher hid themselves away one cold December day, and were quietly made man and wife – and it was no one’s dumb business.

Well, all there is to it, although Herbie delayed divulging his little secret for almost one-half a year, we with a host of relatives and friends, join in wishing him and his charming little bride many years of happiness and prosperity.

I wish I was there, don’t you?

Mrs. Saller Robbed Tuesday Night

Mrs. Saller RobbedMrs. Dorothy Saller was robbed about midnight Tuesday as she checked out the day’s receipts at the Bahlman Gas Station. According to Mrs. Saller, she and Mrs. Rose Muehsler and Mrs. Myrtle Scheiman were on the way home from a Women’s Welfare meeting when they stopped at the station.

As Mrs. Saller came out of the station, two colored men stopped her, took the money bag and ran to the rear of the station. They jumped in a car, went west at a high rate of speed, turning south on Catalpa Street.

The day’s receipts and records were in the money bag and she has no idea of the amount taken.

Mrs. Saller thought one man had something in his right hand but she did not see it too clearly in the dark and could not say it was a gun. They didn’t touch her, just grabbed the bag and ran.

August 26, 1948  “GRAHAM PREPARING SERIES OF HISTORICAL ARTICLES”

Village Trustee Graham, since the discovery of the historic marker, site of the old Hubbard Trail, now known as the Dixie Highway, has in process of preparation an article or perhaps a series of articles touching on this historic trail. This will also include the trail known as the Ox Trail, which was in use long before the survey was run for the present Dixie Highway and which passed through approximately 20 rods west of the present highway. This, on the north side of the village, would be between the residences of Dr. H.H. Hiatt and Wm. Wiggenhauser. It crossed Indiana Street at a point where the present Catalpa Street is located. The trail wound its way through the prairie to Vincennes, Ind.
This article or series will appear in the Herald as soon as sufficient data has been collected. Anyone having any information on this old Hubbard Trail is kindly requested to get in touch with Mr. Graham. He will be glad to receive it and use it if possible.
Graham is also contemplating another project, the complete history of Beecher, which would be a valuable work, and would probably be coveted by many local citizens.

Editor’s note: no historical articles written by Arthur have been found to date

Editor’s note: 1965  Art worked hard for the improvement of the Beecher Community. He donated his personal labor to help install the two tennis courts in 1965 and offered the use of his private family in-ground swimming pool to give the Beecher community’s children swimming lessons. The swimming lessons were taught by his two daughters, Nancy and Sue, along with Yvonne Squire.
