2015 Restorations

With the 2014 roof and masonry restorations completed with the help from Berglund’s Constructions, Bricklayers Union #21,Roofers Union #11, Carpenters Union #434 the hard work is now done and it’s time for the Guardian Angels to get back to work.

Spring 2015

Sandra Lee Thielman and Jason Bright demo all the old broken glass block windows. Paul Wiechen allowed us to dispose of the broken block windows in the H & R Industries dumpsters. Thank You Paul

Bob Howard made and installed board up panels until we could get the new glass block windows installed. Bob also provided us with the scaffolding we needed to work on the ceilings, Thanks Bob

Michael Lambert (Bricklayers Unions #21) of Mayne Builders installs all the new glass block windows and also tuckpoints the interior of the windows.

Jason Bright, Sandra Thielman and Michael Thielman work on restoring the water damage to the ceilings and around the roof windows

Tim Hofmann, Michael Thielman and Eric Watson do the powerwashing to clean up the exterior. The water tanker was supplied by Alan Beseke, Thanks Alan we couldn’t do it without you.

Lisa Cambell, Jade Krukowski, Mikala Adams, Michelle Adams, Lenore Fink,  Eric Watson, Emily Bradford, touch-up the gold lettering.

Jason Bright also installed two whirlybird vents on the roof to help improve the air flow inside the building

Thank you to all the people who have donated their time and efforts in helping with our restoration. Community support is so important in preserving this National Landmark.

There is more work to come.

In the next few weeks , June 13 and June 20 we will be cleaning and polishing the marble interior. This will take a small army of volunteers, anyone willing to help out please contact Sandra at 815-728-8318.

LiUNA Laborers’ International Union of North America, Concrete Finishers Union will be donating the needed labor along with Bob Howard to remove and replace the old cracked front door stoop and sidewalk Approx. the middle of June 2015

We are also hoping to begin improving the landscaping this year, put in a few gardens where fresh flowers can be picked and install information signs and help the property look more like a park setting. Anyone with landscaping, gardening knowledge or who can contribute materials is needed.

We also anxiously await our new stained glass windows. Eric Suevel of Suevel Studios in Arlington Heights has volunteered to reproduce the old original roof skylight windows and create three new windows in the main chapel. Can’t wait to see them installed.

  1. This mausoleum is a treasure. My brother and I have explored hundreds of cemeteries in Illinois and Indiana ranging from the tiniest to ones that cover hundreds os acres, urban and rural. We have never come across a mausoleum this large in a smaller cemetery. It is wonderful that people are working to restore and preserve this unique and important building. It is such a find! It deserves respect and care!

  2. Sandra … how do I get to the Go Fund Me account you have for the Mausoleum? Looking for it to process a donation .. assume that is the best way to contribute. Let me know … thanks
